1. Philosophy of practice – PES embedded in community
Develop a philosophy of practice that embeds informal science institutions in their communities to be active participants in community civic issues, because of their capabilities to convene and facilitate.

PES has the potential to help address real community issues and science museums and other ISE organizations can play a valuable role in their communities that is different from their role in inspiring kids to learn about science. How can this potential be met?

  • Criteria to consider for PES to be community embedded, inclusive, egalitarian, (democratic)?
  • What are implications of positioning ISI as participants of a community of learners/actors?
  • ISIs serve and participate
  • ISIs are not at center but are a recognized component
  • Opening civic space - Libraries do it but how ISIs are differently/better at supporting or facilitating?
  • What are the issues in your community that science (and PES) support or inform?
  • What relationships do we want with our community?
  • Build enough relationships that eventually projects and efforts initiate from community.
  • What mechanisms would support civic relationships?
  • What expertise and knowledge does community have to share in PES effort?
